The Pooch Professor, Doribeth Elkins, has been working with dogs and training them since she was a child. Eventually, she decided to pursue a formal education in dog training and attended the Balu Academy for Dog Trainers under the instruction of nationally-renowned trainer Jean-Claude Balu.
Doribeth then went on to train dogs professionally in both California and New York. She has been featured on the Greg Behrendt Show as their pet expert and was also chosen out of five trainers to be on the TV show You’re Hired.
Doribeth is also responsible for providing her own dogs with excellent training. One of them has worked as a therapy dog for Create A Smile and another one is currently competing in agility. She provides this same kind of training for other people’s dogs as well.
Doribeth is a certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluater (CGC) and is also certified in pet CPR and first aid. Additionally, she is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).
Doribeth cohabitates with six pets, five of which were rescues. “You never know where you’ll find love,” Doribeth says. Her pets include an 11-year-old, male golden retriever named Murphy, a two-year-old, female golden retriever named Finley, a five-year-old, female Shih Tzu named Jolee, a seven-year-old, female King Charles Cavalier named Effie that lives with her part time, an eight-year-old, female Calico Persian named Harper and a three-year-old, female Calico Persian named Grier. Doribeth’s dogs and cats, although they are different breeds and ages, all get along fabulously with each other, another skill that Doribeth can help other pet owners to achieve.
Doribeth loves working with dogs and feels blessed that she gets to spend her days in their company, doing what she enjoys. As The Pooch Professor, Doribeth trains dogs to resolve behavioral issues as well as learn basic commands. Her sole training method is positive reinforcement, involving the use of treats, toys and praise. Doribeth’s ultimate goal is to help dogs and their families to cohabitate together peacefully and put an end to shelter drop offs.
